The commemoration began in 1987 as a way to celebrate female participation in athletics. A Gallup survey in May 2023 found that the vast majority of Americans support the requirement that transgender athletes compete in categories reflecting their birth gender. Seventy percent of respondents supported the requirement, up from 62% in 2021.
